Portland Night in Tokyo.
City of Roses will be part of the Tokyo Design Flow event, titled "Portland Night" on Thursday September 25th . Tokyo Design Flow is a monthly cultural event held in the Harajuku and Omotesando area of Tokyo. Over 23 shops, cafes, nightclubs and galleries participate in this event. The "Portland Night" event is the brain child of Japanese design legend Teruo Kurosaki and sponsored by Media Surf Communications. Mr. Kurosaki's list of accomplishments is vast and varied. He introduced the designs of Marc Newson, Philippe Starck and Shiro Kuramata to the people of Japan, launched the original furniture shop "Idée" and the creative space "Sputnik", and is also the mind behind "Tokyo Design Block", the "Ikejiri Institute of Design (IID)" and "Schooling Pad".
Mr. Kurosaki is a regular visitor to Portland and each year brings a delegation of students from the Ikejiri institute of Design and Schooling Pad, in cooperation with Nike, Wieden & Kennedy, and PNCA. These students tour local business's and attend seminars while in the city. It has been through these visits that Kurosaki became fascinated with the city and its unique qualities. The idea of hosting and promoting a Portland-themed event is Kurosaki's way of bringing a slice of the Rose city to Tokyo. Compound gallery is lucky enough to be selected to participate in this year's event, and host a large, "First Thursday" style art opening that will include a selection of products from Portland.
