MISSION STATEMENT
After years of promoting the American art scene, Compound Gallery has realized that something is missing... independent and underground Japanese artists have no voice here and we want to change that. Each time we travel to Japan, we meet more of these exceptional artists, and are impressed by their innovative, fresh ideas. At the same time, the American art scene is hungry for new and original artists to follow. It is time to expose the American audience to Japanese artworks. It is time to bring together the American art collector and the Japanese artist. This is our goal at Compound Gallery.

Girls at Play
Four female artists who represent a new movement in Japanese art.
NOV 01 - 30 2007
Reception: Nov 1th @ 7:00pm

In the tradition of other Compound Gallery shows, four exciting artists from Japan will be introduced to the city of Portland. Sayaka, Micca, Yuka Yamaguchi and Makiko Sugawa do not create images of the stereotypical Japanese female. Their girls have a secret. Behind closed doors they play exotic and wonderful games. Sayaka's girls explore a newly discovered adult world in a soft wash of color. Micca demonstrates the minimal nature in which her girls play with fashion. Yuka's girls want to learn what makes girls tick on the inside. Makiko's girls enjoy a private life filled with delicate hidden pleasures. This show is sponsored by Scion.
