MISSION STATEMENT
After years of promoting the American art scene, Compound Gallery has realized that something is missing... independent and underground Japanese artists have no voice here and we want to change that. Each time we travel to Japan, we meet more of these exceptional artists, and are impressed by their innovative, fresh ideas. At the same time, the American art scene is hungry for new and original artists to follow. It is time to expose the American audience to Japanese artworks. It is time to bring together the American art collector and the Japanese artist. This is our goal at Compound Gallery.

BLISS EXPRESS: Illustrating Hapiness
August 02 - 31 2007
Reception: August 2nd @ 7:00pm

This month we are collaborating with Bliss Express, a new art book featuring various Asian artists published by GUU PRESS. We have selected 5 artists from the book for this show.

OGUSHI
OHGUSHI.JP
Born in 1977, self-taught Tokyo artist Ohgushi paints in rolls and sweeps of sumi ink on traditional Japanese paper, creating luscious contemporary bijinga (literally, pictures of beautiful women). He has collaborated with Italian couture house Emilio Pucci and his work has appeared in fashion magazines such as Vogue Nippon, Elle Japon, +81, and TWILL. He has exhibited in Tokyo and Hong Kong.
AYA KONDO
KICK-N-ROLL.COM
Born in 1978, Tokyo artist and poet Aya Kondo graduated from Musashino Art University in 2002 with a Bachelors in Printmaking. She has exhibited in Tokyo and New York, and contributes to album covers and magazines. Her bold prints on rice paper are a distinctive blend of Japanese tradition and rock n roll. A self-professed rebel against collective action, Kondo describes the woodcut as her best medium to initiate dialogue with the masses.

MARCOS CHIN
MARCOSCHIN.COM
Born in 1975, Canadian Marcos Chin graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design, winner of the Illustration Medal, in 1999. He currently works as a freelance illustrator in New York City and teaches fashion illustration at the Maryland Institute College of Art. In addition to the ubiquitous Lavalife campaign, his work can be found in numerous magazines, newspapers, album covers, and books like Illustration Now! Chins clients include The New Yorker, The New York Times, Time, Sports Illustrated, and Rolling Stone.

RAIN
Hangzhou-based artist Rain, also known as Ruan Yunting, graduated from the China Academy of Art with a Bachelors in Literature and a Masters in Film and Animation, and currently teaches there. A former visiting scholar at the Rhode Island School of Design, she has made short films but is best known for her graphic novels and short comics, including Leave (2002) and Pieces of You (2004). Rain has published two art books to acclaim, Ethereal Wings (2004) and Midnight Inks (2006).

FUCO UEDA
WWW.GEOCITIES.JP/UEDAFUCO
Japanese artist Fuco Ueda, born in 1979, graduated from Tokyo Polytechnic University with a Masters in Media Art in 2003. Since her first solo show in 2001, Ueda has exhibited extensively to critical acclaim and published an art book of her paintings, Praparat (2003). The stench of wrenched pleasures permeates her work, reflecting the complex, changing psychology of young Japanese girls and the dark side of modern society. Her dystopia is surreal and alluring, characteristics enhanced by her decision to speckle the surface, creating a verdigris veil of dust and rainwater.
