MISSION STATEMENT
After years of promoting the American art scene, Compound Gallery has realized that something is missing... independent and underground Japanese artists have no voice here and we want to change that. Each time we travel to Japan, we meet more of these exceptional artists, and are impressed by their innovative, fresh ideas. At the same time, the American art scene is hungry for new and original artists to follow. It is time to expose the American audience to Japanese artworks. It is time to bring together the American art collector and the Japanese artist. This is our goal at Compound Gallery.

Introduce yourself...

My name is Nishi. I'm a self-taught artist from Japan. I was always into drawing ever since I was little. My Art work is based on the Japanese Calligraphy, Ukiyoe Art and Japanse house Crest. I am also very into the seasons, each season in Japan has a vivid color difference and it reflects my art works.

My Art is inspired by the memories of old time and the feeling I had that time

Describe your art...

The most important thing when I am working on the art work is to listen to the art work. I closely communicate with my art work while I am working. Materials for the art work is also very important. I won't be able to expand my imagination and expression without the various materials that I use for the piece. Please see my art work and you can see dynamic brush stroke and detail work of the character. I think my art itself can tell you more than the words. My intention is to create new wave/style in art merging Painting and Japanese calligraphy.

1. What are you currently working on?

I am curretnly working on the book collaborating with my photographer friend.

2. Why is art important?

Art is the only method to express my self and It is now major part of myself.

3. What do you think people walk away with after viewing your art?

That will be the country of Japan, the country i grow up and learn all the feeling/senses I strongly believe that people will feel the beauty, culture and revolutionary style of this country from my art work

4. How does your typical day unfold?

I am working as a fashion designer and creating art work at the same time. I also interact with other creators and artists to increase my creativity and learn how to express my art work in different way. It is pretty exiting everyday. Ah also, I love drinking beer after work!!. That is the best moment!

5. What was the most significant event in your artistic life?

Tokyo Style in Sweden. That was really fun.

6. What is your favorite medium and why?

I have used various materials but i would say Japanese blush and Sumi-paint. I also love Washi-paper.
You won't be able to fix the blush stroke once you are done. One stroke creates own style every time. I like that feeling.

7. What artist do you admire most?

Hokusai
I admire the way he creates art work. He adds his own life style and feeling every time he draws the art work. His spirit is amazing.

8. What is your dream commission?

I would love to work on the art work that I have to spend a few years to finish! I am looking for the client who is willing to give me this opportunity!

9. What are you listening to right now?

Electronica and Yoshida Brothers. I prefer no lyric music when I work on my art work. I am also interested in collaborating with music.

10. What are your future goals in the art world?

Ummmm-- I do not know if there is a finish line in Art. I feel like a runner who is waiting for the go sign on the start line. I do not see the clear future but i would like to start my career in the best condition and I would like to keep creating the art works
