MISSION STATEMENT
After years of promoting the American art scene, Compound Gallery has realized that something is missing... independent and underground Japanese artists have no voice here and we want to change that. Each time we travel to Japan, we meet more of these exceptional artists, and are impressed by their innovative, fresh ideas. At the same time, the American art scene is hungry for new and original artists to follow. It is time to expose the American audience to Japanese artworks. It is time to bring together the American art collector and the Japanese artist. This is our goal at Compound Gallery.

RENEW
Featuring new art works by Yoko Furusho, Jaz Harnold and Cannaday Chapman

May 5th - June 2nd 2011, Opening Reception May 5th @ 7:00pm

YOKO FURUSHO: is a Japanese artist/illustrator based in New York. She was born in Tokyo and moved to New York to study illustration at the School of Visual Arts. After her graduation, she started her career as a professional illustrator/artist. She likes to draw details, textures and patterns with ink and acrylics, and often uses fashion as her inspiration. She is addicted to collecting fashion magazines and likes to look at a lot of dresses and cute textiles. Now she is working as an illustrator for various magazines and newspapers. Furusho is selected for the winner of Art Directors Club YG7 and for many other competitions in her early career. Her works had been featured for Maybelline New York, KEDS collective, and Glamour Magazine in Paris. Her work has also been shown at several other shows around the world.

JAZ HAROLD: was born and raised in Monroe, CT. In 2004 she moved to New York City to study illustration at the School of Visual Arts. She has since remained in New York working as a freelance illustrator and gallery artist. Jaz draws, paints, sculpts, and sews characters, creatures, and landscapes that together form a cute, though slightly off-putting fantasy world. Adorable objects are often juxtaposed against unsettling, anatomically realistic details. This stark contrast of the fantastically naïve and the disturbingly gritty gives a candid, almost pervasively surrealist tone to her work.

CANNADAY CHAPMAN: Chapman was born in Huntington, West Virginia and raised in Upstate New York. He Studied communications design at Pratt/Munson Williams Proctor Art Institute before receiving a scholarship from New York City’s School of Visual Arts where he earned a BFA in illustration. While in school, Cannaday earned multiple awards and recognition. Including a scholarship award from the Society of Illustrators and work featured in CMYK Magazine #37 and #41. Cannaday has had work published in a variety of different markets including educational, editorial, and advertising. His work has also been featured in 3x3 Illustration Annual.

BROOKE WEEBER: is a Portland based illustrator who brings whimsical nature based scenes to life through delicate washes of watercolor and intricate detail with fine point pens. Complex pieces combine animals with people, mystical creatures with fantastical landscapes, and repetitive pattern with wide open spaces, always featuring an iconic subtle color palate and a playful aesthetic. Brooke graduated with her Bachelor's of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Oregon, with a focus in oil painting. In 2005, she moved to New York to pursue a passion for pastry and attend the French Culinary Institute, concentrating on the art of cake sculpting and decorating. She soon rediscovered her love of Folk Art, Native American culture and design, and in 2009 decided to return to Oregon to focus on illustration. Although she's showed work at various locations around town, including the Grass Hut, Mississippi Studios, Farm Cafe, and Tribute Gallery, she spends most of her time working on commissions from a diverse selection of musical artists and small businesses locally and nationwide. Some of her most recent clients include Blitzen Trapper, Nick Jaina Band, Oh Darling, Boom Vintage, and LA based clothing designers, Wolves Kill Sheep.
