We've all heard tell of the December 21st, 2012 end of the Mayan calendar and what that could possibly mean for the world. Theories abound, from the extreme to the mundane, the dark and heavy to the light hearted.
This December, Compound Gallery presents End of the World, a show that explores what one's imagination can conjure when faced with a possible end, or change, to the world they know.
Please join us for the opening reception on the first Thursday of December from 7 to 10 pm.

Andie Mazorol and Tynan Kerr are collaborative painters based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota, who began working together years ago while sharing studio space. Their paintings utilize a collage approach, creating flat landscapes populated by figures with exaggerated characteristics and shifting identities. In their work, bodies stand as shells of recognizable figures or they vanish within a patterned facade, creating environments unimaginable to either author individually.

Amanda James is a printmaker and illustrator currently based out of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Her work is a product of listening to loud and heavy music, telling bad jokes and compulsively buying books and toys that are meant for children. She loves to draw and print things that make people smile, which usually results in friendly, brightly colored creatures partaking in ridiculous activities. She received her BS in Drawing and Printmaking from Portland State University in 2011 and is currently pursuing her MFA in Printmaking from Louisiana State University.

Brendan Monroe was born and raised in Southern California and received his BFA from Art Center College of Design. He has exhibited internationally at galleries such as Richard Heller in Los Angeles, Galerie LJ in Paris and Faye Fleming in Geneva. Through paintings and sculptures, Monroe tells a story of a world filled with unique personalities and imaginary organisms. Monroe cultivates a taste for scientific challenges, relationships to math, the properties in physics, and the surreal.

Clare Rosean is an artist/illustrator based in Chicago, where she was born and raised. One word to describe her art might be “traumwerk”. She received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2010, and MFA from the University of Chicago in 2012.

David M. Cook was born in Louisville, Kentucky in the year of 1972. He's a self taught color-blind artist, primarily an illustrator

Gala Bent is a drawing-centric painter, working most often on paper, but also on walls in site-specific spaces and in animation. In her gouache-colored drawings, one thing becomes another, and borders are uncertain. The result is a fertile, cataclysmic landscape where constructed elements and organic patterns of flow both collide and mesh, often angling toward abstraction. Her most recent series, O Mountain, takes the singular form of a mountain as its focus. These forms become sentient characters, heaving their masses into sighs and tears. Gala was born near Detroit, raised in Northern Indiana, schooled in Buffalo, and now lives in Seattle with her husband, fellow artist Zack Bent, and three young sons. Upcoming exhibitions include G.Gibson Gallery (Seattle) and Ampersand International (San Francisco). Gala was selected to be a Jordan Schnitzer Printmaking resident this October at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology in Oregon. See and read more at www.ggibsongallery.com

Jacob Markrof is late-night, sub-level, lurk-fanatic who lives for strange situations. Portland based, Jacob draws most of his influences from the rainy season, where he can pour over books on alchemy, mysticism, ancient cultures, medieval history, cults, conspiracy theory, and Magik. Through his oil paintings he combines his knowledge of these categories into regal medieval-era portraits. Jacob studied traditional animation at the School of Visual Arts in New York and graduated in 2004. It wasn't until the fall of 2010 that he found his passion for oil paintings. Self taught he creates his own form of alchemy by changing canvas, wood, and paint into portals to different dimensions.

Jennifer Parks is a comic artist, illustrator, and Co-member of the Pony Club Gallery. Her world is filled with ghosts, charcoal, and ornamental gatherings. Her work without compromise tells the tale of that world in intensely rendered darkness. Jennifer was most recently featured in the comic anthology Study Group 12 with a tale of spirits that lurk someplace between your dreams and your window.

Joseph McVetty lives and works in Portland, Oregon. The skull masked participants of his drawings act out communal rituals involving new age signifiers aimed at evoking the feelings associated with uniformed homespun cult drop-outs.

Keith was born in 1978 in Tacoma, WA. He went to Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA. He received his BA in Fine Art. He later went to Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, OR. He left a year before completion of his BFA to accept a job at Seattle design firm Ames Bros. He worked there for 2 years. He currently lives in Portland, OR. He spends most of his time painting pictures of animals and people.

Leo Zarosinski is an illustrator and designer in Portland, Oregon. An avid creator, Leo spends frequent hours illustrating, printing, designing and building all sorts of stuff. His illustration work is about breaking down narratives into their most pivotal moments and giving the viewer a glimpse into a larger story

Hailing from the Bay Area, I currently reside in Portland, Oregon, and I hold a BFA in Illustration from Pacific Northwest College of Art. I work as a production assistant for Bent Image Lab creating storyboards, set designs, props, and puppets for stop-motion productions.

Pat Perry is an artist and illustrator who calls Michigan home. The lands of the north, the people he meets, and ordinary Midwestern streets have always moved him. Making drawings each day is his attempt to digest the indegistable; seemingly indescribable life experience, and the ephemeral acquaintances and scenery that is carried along with such encounters, situations and chapters. In between showing his art or working on an assortmant of creative projects, Pat travels quite frequently. Although he is happy to be able to speak and have an audience through his artwork, he does his best everyday to listen and learn from the world he lives in.

Sean Edward Whelan is an Australian artist living and working in Niigata, Japan. Culling inspiration from traditional buildings and architecture, old found objects and religious paraphernalia, Sean creates complex figurative artworks that explore the mysteries and mythologies hiding in present day Japan.

Steve Seeley lives and works in Chicago. He has shown his art throughout the U.S and extensively in the Midwest. His work investigates a world where man, fascinated by outer space, has vacated earth to live in the solitude of space. In his absence, animals begin to fulfill their true destinies. These destinies include, but are not limited to, forming an alliance against man (shall he ever return), developing super hero like powers, and rocking out to heavy metal.
