Having been born into a family that highly values Japanese aesthetic, Ryo Okamoto moved to London to attend art school in 1995. During the next five years he immersed himself in a variety of studies, from economics to biology, while continuing his art, having been inspired by artists such as Basquiat and Keith Herring. Upon his return to Japan in 1999, Okamoto had his first solo art show at IDEE SHOP Pacific. He took a break from art in 2002 till 2009, during which time he worked for an imports company, a job that took him all over Europe. His interest in art resurfaced in 2009 with a heightened interest in folk art, a small collection of which he accumulated while traveling.
